Kathryn Schleich’s debut novel does not disappoint! Even though this is a seasoned writer of short stories, her first novel showcases her undeniable talent in weaving a heartfelt, yet equally thrilling novel.

We follow Captain Linda Turner as she is called to a gruesome homicide scene. She locates a family, a father and two young children, buried in a garden outside of a pastoral home. Soon she discovers the mother and wife is missing. This begins her hunt for a sadistic and manipulative killer.

Ray is a pastor who is down on his luck. His wife passed away from cancer and his spirituality is waning. His television broadcast is soon to be cut by the networks and he feels his two best friends may not be happy with the outcome. As he’s telling his bestfriends and teammates in the broadcast that they will be closing the broadcast, a young woman enters with grand ideas to revamp his show. Needless to say, this woman is mysterious yet charismatic and knows how to market their efforts to reach more believers. Susannah is a heaven-send to the team…well, for a while anyway. Soon they figure out that there is much more to Susannah than meets the eye.

Schleich weaves the story through twists and turns and has the reader on the edge of their seat. We understand the backstory and the character flaws that make most everyone in the story redeemable in our minds. I thoroughly enjoyed the writing style and pace of the novel and would only critique that a very minimal amount of dialogue was a bit “stiff” and unnatural. Other than that, I was enthralled from beginning to the end! Highly recommended for people that enjoy psychological thrillers with a little faith and a little detective work.
