Whew Chile! Karen Hamilton serves up a gigantic dose of jealousy, envy and murder in her latest novel, The Last Wife. Here’s a brief synopsis from Goodreads to whet your appetite:
Two women. A dying wish. And a web of lies that will bring their world crashing down.
Nina and Marie were best friends—until Nina was diagnosed with a terminal illness. Before she died, Nina asked Marie to fulfill her final wishes.
But her mistake was in thinking Marie was someone she could trust.
What Nina didn’t know was that Marie always wanted her beautiful life, and that Marie has an agenda of her own. She’ll do anything to get what she wants.
Marie thinks she can keep her promise to her friend’s family on her own terms. But what she doesn’t know is that Nina was hiding explosive secrets of her own…

My review:
We follow headcase Marie as she wrestles with her own reality and lackluster life. Her life is slowly turning to a boring mess and it doesn’t help that her boyfriend and her can’t conceive even when trying for months. Then add insult to injury, her boyfriend doesn’t seem like he even wants to sleep with her to have a baby. What’s up with that?! Well, Marie is an artful and crafty little lady and finds a way to still finagle a baby out of an unfortunate event. Her bestfriend, Nina, is the root of everything Marie wants in her life, except her terminal illness, of course. After Nina’s death, Marie feels rejuvenated in making her life better…which means more like Nina’s. Little does she know, if she wants Nina’s life, she’s going to have to become someone she really doesn’t want to be. This is the quintessential story of the “grass is not always greener on the other side”. Hamilton weaves the story with exceptional grace. You love the main character and hate her at the same time. You love and hate every single character in the novel actually at one point or another. This would be a great book club read since it has many layers of who’s right and wrong. Highly recommended for people that enjoy a fast-paced domestic mystery with a twist!
